Hi Stamping Friends and Happy Friday! Todays card share features the Magical Mermaid stamp set and I finally got around to playing with the Stampin’ Blend Alcohol markers.  They are super juicy and blend really nice. I know they are not available at the moment but once they are, I recommend you grab them!

To create this card, I wanted the mermaid half in and half out of the water.  Sandy Allnock created a few water scene cards and her work really inspired me to create this card using the Stampin’Blend markers.  I’m no stranger to alcohol markers and I’ve always used 3 colours to blend so you can say I was a bit intimidated with the Stampin’Blends due to it being 2 blending colours only. I hope SU introduces a third shade to compliment the colour combinations! None the less, it was really nice using the Stampin’Blends, they work very well!

I thought this card was perfect for the Stampin’Blends since my scene didn’t quite need everything blended perfectly. To start, I stamped the mermaid first making sure she is angled to my liking. I coloured her tail first with the pink markers and added some Rich Razzleberry for the dark highlights and her hair wreath. I used Ivory on her body and Dark Daffodil Delight and Light Crumb Cake on her hair to create highlights.

Now for the ‘funner’ part!  LOL. Using Light Pool Party, I drew a light slightly wavy line across the panel to create a waterline from her waist down.  Next, I used the Light and Dark Pool Party marker and flicked straight streaks from the waterline down to the end of the panel. I also created streaks from the bottom up too. As you create the streaks, leave some white sections for highlights. I then used Light Bermuda Bay going over the Pool Party streaks and keeping it light and even as I lay the colour down. Go back with Light Pool Party and blend the colours together. These two colours won’t blend together but just to soften the edges. The next colour I used is Light Night of Navy. Yes, its bold and a bit scary but it will add depth and more interest to the scene.  Don’t add too many streaks across the panel but once you are happy with the look, go back with Pool Party to soften the edges.

I did add Dark Smoky Grey on the left side of the mermaid and then blended outward with Light Smoky Grey and lightly with the Colour Lifer to give her dimension.  Don’t go nuts with the Colour Lifter.  It does take colour away and works well when used sparingly! You’ll be able to test it out when you create the bubbles in this scene! I’ll explain further down.

As for the top part of the water, I drew thin, long and short wavy lines with Light Night of Navy. I then added streaks using Light Bermuda Bay and Pool Party until the area is filled in with the same colour tone. Sponge lightly with Pool Party to blend the colours and try to leave some light areas too for highlights. To tie the mermaid in and to get her to look like she’s in the water and not outside of the water, you need to add a bit of colour over top her tail.  Lightly add some streaks with both Pool Party markers down from where her body starts in the water and then lightly add Light Bermuda Bay and I mean ‘light’!.  As long as you have a blue/green hue overtop of her tail section, she should look like she is in the water.

To create the mountains. You can use the thin mountain stamp from the Waterfront stamp set to help create them but I drew them using the Crumb Cake markers and to get it bolder, I used the Bronze marker.  For the sky, I added some streaks in the sky using the water stamp from High Tide. I used Pool Party and Lemon Lime Twist Ink pad and using a small sponge dauber, I sponged around the edges with Pool Party Ink Pad.  I did leave some white areas to add depth and laid a bit more Pool Party on the left side of the sky.

Now for the finishing touches! I stamped the 3 smaller birds from the High Tide stamp set in Black. To create the bubbles in the water. I used the Colour Lifter Stampin’Blend Marker.  Draw big and small circles to lift away the pigment. Create bubbles around the tail and towards the surface. Grab your White Gel Pen next.  Outline the water line and widen the line going towards the sides to help give that illusion of a water line.  Add dots around the mermaid tail and around the bubbles and towards the surface. I also drew big and small circle bubbles too.  For the top part of the water, I added streaks and dots in areas to tie everything in.

Finally, I stamped the birthday sentiment from the Magical Mermaid stamp set and white embossed it on Vellum paper. I created a fish tail banner and adhered it with a few glue dots and added some pearls. I mounted the mermaid piece onto a white panel and then onto a Bermuda Bay Panel.  Oy! Another long winded post!  If I can find the time, I’ll try to create a video if you are interested. I will try!!
